Pakistani interior minister Abdur Rehman Malik has invited his Indian counterpart for a public debate on the issue of Mumbai attacks. He claims that Pakistan has done more than India as far as investigations into the Mumbai attack are concerned. He also said that his country cannot take action against Ameer Jamat-ud-Dawah Prof. Hafiz Saeed on the basis of “hearsay” and needs more time to assess the genuineness of information provided by India on him. On the other hand Indian foreign minister SM Krishna has said that Pakistan has a vested interest in blocking the inquiry into the Mumbai attacks and is safeguarding Hafiz Saeed. Indian interior minister has visited United States to intervene in the issue and press Pakistan to act against Hafiz Muhammad Saeed.

We were expecting that with the coming of Obama to power, Pakistan will find some relief on its North Western borders with Afghanistan and peace process with India would begin, but it didn’t happen. On the contrary, Obama reneged on the promise to help solve the Kashmir issue, and closed his eyes and lips to Israeli atrocities on Hammas, thus lowering his own image of ‘a leader of substance.’ Now he has spelled-out the Afpak Strategy and in pursuit of its objectives, he has confronted Pakistan, with the demand for “shifting the Centre of gravity of Afghan war, to Pakistan.” The implementation has just begun with the launching of the army against the militants in Dir and Swat. However, there are some other aspects that need to be examined.
One: The American and the allied forces are preparing to leave Afghanistan as acknowledged by Obama Read the rest of this entry »

Lahore.

Lahore High Court has ordered the release of Hafiz Saeed, head of Islamic charity Jamat-ud-Dawah Pakistan. A full bench of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday morning heard a petition against the detention of Jamat-ud-Dawah head Saeed and a central leader Colonel (r) Nazir Ahmad.
The bench, comprising Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Justice Hasnat Ahmad Khan and Justice Zubdatul Hussain, heard arguments of the petitioners’ counsel after those of the attorney general. “The house arrest of Hafiz Saeed is illegal and unconstitutional and termed it as the violation of human rights,” Read the rest of this entry »

Pakistan is facing electricity crisis these days. In the name of ‘load management’ Pakistan Electric Power Company deprives Pakistani public from electricity for 8 to 12 hours daily. No one knows what the exact reason behind electricity shortfall is as PEPCO is not sharing the cause, it only tells us the effect. When I tried to dig out the truth I came to know that electricity shortfall claims are false and there are huge contradictions between PEPCO’s claims and its own facts and figures. These contradictions led me to the conclusion that in fact there is no justification of ‘load shedding’. If for the sake of argument one believes in PEPCO’s claim of shortfall then too, load shedding should not exceed from four hours a day. Read the rest of this entry »

No one knows what will be the final outcome of the ongoing military operation in Malakand division of Pakistan’s frontier province; however, one of the immediate consequences of the operation is that the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) has gone into the millions. The other outcome is that the Taliban, who were increasingly losing their credibility prior to the operation against them, have now received a chance to prove that they are victims of ‘America’s allies’, and they will most certainly exploit the collateral damage caused by military operation in their favor. Ever since 2004 when military operations first began in tribal areas, Read the rest of this entry »

Lashkar-e-Taiba’s trademark has been stolen, and the irony is that the stolen trademark is now being used against Lashkar itself. The recent attack on the Manawan Police Trainin
g School Lahore, after the previous attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in the same city, is the latest example of this peculiar development. India has been facing such attacks, usually referred to as ‘fidayeen attacks’, since 1999. Read the rest of this entry »

Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has said the Taleban can attack India during the upcoming Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian parliament) elections. The Indian media had previously published reports that the Taleban had reached (occupied) Kashmir and are poised to enter India from there. It therefore needs serious attention, analysis, and understanding, whether the Taleban really do pose a threat to India or whether Indian statements and media reports are in reality a pretext to pave the way for further Indian interference in Afghanistan’s affairs. The evidence which I offer in support of this contention is that the Taleban have never carried out any armed activity outside Afghanistan, nor have they ever hinted of having such an intention either. I must also mention here that I do not assign any weight to Baitullah Mehsud’s assertion of attacking Washington Read the rest of this entry »

President Obama’s new Afghan policy is the talk of the town, yet instead of correcting the error which is the fundamental cause of failure of the allies, this latest policy merely augments the fiasco further. America and its allies are not only aware of this, but in fact they have openly accepted and voiced their belief, that they cannot achieve success in Afghanistan without Pakistan’s full cooperation. It is exactly because of this elementary awareness that the U.S. intervened to avert an assured Indo-Pak war after the Mumbai events, so that Pakistan would not have to divert its attention from the American war in Afghanistan. Yet despite acceptance and recognition of this fact, the U.S. has continued to allow such a fundamental flaw to exist in its Afghan policy with the result that Pakistan would not be truly able to help and commit itself to the American cause in Afghanistan.
